What is Pilates?

What is a Sestina?

Pilates is a system of exercises developed as "Contrology" By Joseph Pilates in the 1920's.
Pilates' main focus is on deepening core strength which makes it ideal for chronic conditions like back pain, hip pain, and overall stiffness.
With it's clever design, it works the entire body so you can expect to see strength in your core, arms, and legs.
It requires concentration and control of breath which your instructor will guide you to understand. Because it is a low-impact form of exercise, it is available to be practiced by every body type. There is no too old, too inflexible, too this, or too that.
While some Pilates is done on the Mat, we also use equipment (and some spring tension) to increase your awareness and connection to your movement.

The Sestina is a form of poetry that uses a method of repeating words at the end of each line.  It has 6 stanzas of 6 lines each, with an envoy (or tercet) of three lines to conclude the poem. Similarly Pilates has six basic principles: concentration, control, centering, precision, flow, and breath.  Pilates also follows a basic structure for the duration of the workout.

Pilates Sestina was created on a road trip by our beloved Kylie Bonne. Kylie passed away unexpectedly several years ago and as our studio evolves, we continue to honor Kylie by instructing our Pilates with Love and Kindness.
